Consultants I hired For My Private Practice

The Importance of Consultants

Most people have a ton of questions when they first start out in private practice. In fact, the questions never stop. As you learn and grow your practice, you will always have more and more questions. Sometimes, these questions are straight forward and require minimal research such as “what EHR should I use?” Other times the questions are confusing and difficult to answer, such as “how do I hire an employee?”. The difficult questions are where consultants come in to play.

Barriers to Hiring a Consultant

There are many barriers that prevent people from securing a consultant, but two I have experienced are cost and the illusion that you can simply learn “stuff” on your own. Cost is a serious barrier and some people simply can not afford a consultant. I am working to reduce that barrier through my Membership Community. As part of this virtual community you will have all your questions reviewed and responded to by me personally. You can ask any and all questions about solo or group practice. You also have access to a growing toolbox of resources. The community costs $25 per month. There is no commitment and can be cancelled at any time. You can join for free for the first month using code BetaUser at check out.

The other barrier is believing that you can learn on your own through videos and Google searches. Now don’t get me wrong, I think a ton can be learned independently this way. This can greatly reduce the time and cost of a consultant, however, you will have a hard time learning the nuances of mental health law through YouTube videos. This is information that a lawyer can easily provide you during a consultation call. Not to mention, a consultation call with an expert will give you peace of mind that YouTube can’t.

Below are the different consultants I have used in private practice

Consultants I Have Used:

Human Resources Consultant

I spoke with an HR consultant before hiring my first therapist. They spoke to me about requirements such as the insurances I needed to have for employees, whether or not I needed a handbook, what type of payroll software I needed, and a few other things. Ultimately, I did not continue beyond the free consultation because I was able to get these answers and more from a lawyer and an accountant.

Lawyer

Consulting with a lawyer is crucial. They provided me with legal guidance as it pertains to practicing within my scope of licensure, they answered questions about how to hire employees, they provided me with an intake packet, and all the forms I needed to hire employees. I have calls with an attorney a few times per year to get guidance on questions that come up. The direction and guidance provided is invaluable.

Accountant

Similar to an attorney I have worked with an accountant on multiple levels. Not only do they complete my complex group practice taxes at the end of the year, but they also provide guidance on other tax concerns as well. They ensure that my business is compliant with all the different state laws. Moreover, they often help with the set up of payroll and other services.

Google Ads/SEO firm

I am in the process of working with an ad firm now. Google Ads and SEO are another way to level up your practice. So far my experience has been wonderful, but I will post an update when I am farther along in the process.

Other therapists

It’s always helpful to speak with other therapists who may be further along in their journey. This is especially true if they have consulted with the above professionals. They can share their experience with you and other valuable resources. When therapists work together, it goes a long way.
